Shakespeare in the Garden: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

CHILDREN’S MATINEE VERSION

— Auditions: May 19, 1-4 pm and May 20 & 21, 6-9 pm at 130 N. 1st St., Suite 133, Wausau, WI 54403

— One Matinee Performance scheduled for Aug. 3, 2019 at the Monk Botanical Gardens in Wausau.

Please note there are two separate casts for Shakespeare in the Garden — a children’s cast that will perform a single afternoon matinee performance that has been especially adapted for families and young audiences and an adult cast that will perform three evening performances of the traditional Shakespeare play. Character Breakdown:

The Dreamer (female, a young girl confused by Shakespeare)

Puck (male or female, mischievous, fun-loving fairy)

Moth (male or female, meditative, contemplative fairy)

Cobweb (male or female, mixed-up fairy)

Mustardseed (male or female, disapproving fairy)

Peaseblossom (male or female, sweet, gentle fairy)

Theseus (male, Duke of Athens, regal)

Hippolyta (female, Queen of the Amazons, betrothed to Theseus)

Philostrate (male or female, Theseus’s Master of the Revels, dry sense of humour)

Egeus/Egeia (male or female, parent of Hermia, emotional)

Hermia (female, Egeus’s daughter, in love with Lysander, small spitfire)

Lysander (male, in love with Hermia, competitive with Demetrius)

Helena (female, tall young woman with extremely low self-esteem, loves Demetrius)

Demetrius (male, in love with Hermia … maybe, competitive with Lysander)

Quince/Prologue (male or female, carpenter, a befuddled, kindly director)

Bottom/Pyramus (male, a chewing-scenery actor)

Flute/Thisbe (female, insecure bellows-mender)

Snout/Wall (male or female, actor/actress of great emotion)

Snug/Lion (male or female, means, well, except of course when playing the Lion)

Starveling/Moonshine (male or female, really tries very, very hard to get it right)

Oberon (male, King of the Fairies, headstrong, stubborn & gets what he wants)

Titania (female, Queen of the Fairies & as stubborn & single-minded as Oberon)

Dancing Fairies of Titania’s Court (male or female)

Character Breakdown:

Theseus: The Duke of Athens. Marrying Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons after having recently won a war against them.  Male.

Hippolyta: Queen of the Amazons, betrothed to Theseus following Athens victory over her people.  Female.

Philostrate: Theseus’s Master of the Revels.  Male.

Egeus: A courtier at Theseus’s court.  Male. 

Hermia: Egeus’s daughter, in love with Lysander. She refuses to marry Demetrius despite her father’s threats.  Female.

Lysander: A young man of Athens, of good family & fortune.  Male.

Helena: A young lady of Athens, obsessed with Demetrius.  Female.

Demetrius: Not the most admirable of young men. Having wooed & won Helena, he directs his attentions to Hermia (who’s not interested but whose father favors him).  Male.

Peter Quince: A carpenter with literary pretensions who organizes some fellow workers into preparing a play he has written to be presented at the royal wedding.  Male.

Bottom: A weaver who loves being on stage … and is a bit of a diva.  Male.

Flute: A working class young lad struggling with puberty.  Male.

Snout: A tinker who participates in Quince’s play.  Male.

Snug: A dim-witted working man who participates in Quince’s play.  Male.

Starveling: A tailor who participates in Quince’s play.  Male or female.

Oberon: King of the Fairies. Proud, angry, vengeful.  Male.

Titania: Queen of the Fairies. Her quarrel with her husband unbalances nature.  Female.

Puck (aka Robin Goodfellow): An amoral prankster & Oberon’s jester.  Male or female.

Fairies of Titania’s Court: Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, Dew Fairy, First Singing Fairy, Second Singing Fairy  : Males and/or females.
