Thanksgiving: A Play

— August 26 & 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Out of the Woods Rehearsal Studio at Whitewater Music Hall at 130 1st St., Wausau, WI 54403

This is a locally written comedy (with a touch of drama) revolving around three generations of women in a Wisconsin family as they gather over the years for the holidays – particularly Thanksgiving. There are 7 roles in this production -- all female. Auditions will consist of a cold reading of selected scenes. The play will be presented as dinner theater at the Wausau Elks Lodge November 6, 7 & 9. The rehearsal schedule will be determined by director & cast availability. (The Out of the Woods Rehearsal Studio is located in the lower level of Whitewater Music Hall in downtown Wausau. We recommend parking in the parking lot which is accessible from River Drive.)

GRANDMA – The Grandmother & matriarch of the family. She is opinionated, old & set in her ways … but everything she does is ultimately out of love. Speaks with a hint of a Wisconsin-Scandinavian accent. (Think Betty White as Rose in Golden Girls – it is NOT a Fargo or Canadian accent.)

AUNT EDNA – 40s-60s. One of the “Aunts.” She is extremely OCD & a Martha Stewart wannabe. A little naïve sometimes. Her daughter is perfect & can do no wrong.

AUNT GINNY (VIRGINIA) – 40s-60s. Another one of the “Aunts” & Holly’s mother. She is loving & the nicest of the aunts … except for her occasional tendencies to be a bit of a know it all.

AUNT NINA – 40s-50s. (pronounced ni-nah) Youngest of the “Aunts,” Mother of three daughters, including Kristen. She is extremely generous & loving but sometimes overbearingly so.

KRISTEN/KRIS/KRISSY – 20s-30s. Daughter/Granddaughter/Niece/Sister. She sees many life changes during the course of the play. She is strong but sensitive & believes in carrying on family traditions. She often feels out-shadowed by her cousins.

HOLLY – 30s. One of the many cousins & Aunt Ginny’s daughter. The life of the party. Fabulous sense of humour. Acts as a big sister to Kristen.

ALEX – 20s. Nina’s youngest daughter & Kristen’s sister. Has a dark, deadpan sense of humour. Skinny, petite & beautiful.

By Marsh Norman, Lucy Simon & Frances Hodgson Burnett

This enchanting classic of children’s literature is reimagined in brilliant musical style by composer Lucy Simons & Marsha Norman. Orphaned in India, 11-year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald & his invalid son Colin. The estate’s many wonders include a magic garden which beckons the children with haunting melodies & the “Dreamers” — spirits from Mary’s past who guide her through her new life, dramatizing The Secret Garden’s compelling tale of forgiveness & renewal. This production offers roles for 12 men, 10 women, 1 boy & 1 girl.

Character Breakdown:

Lily: Female, 25-45, Soprano Bb3-D6. Mary’s aunt & Archibald Craven’s wife. Died of a tragic accident within her garden & metaphorically haunts the walls of Misselthwaite Manor.

Mary Lennox: Female, 9-15, Ab3-D5. A 10-year-old girl sent to live with her uncle, Archibald, when her parents die from cholera in India. Quite the curious explorer & often finding herself in trouble. Stubborn & always fighting for what she believes in.

Dr. Neville Craven: Male, 30-50, Baritone C3-F#4. Archibald’s brother. Trapped by the idea he is responsible for the caretaking of Colin. Even though he was never loved back by Lily, he’s still in love wither. This adds to his unwillingness to move on & leave Misselthwaite.

Martha: Female, 16-35, Mezzo-Soprano Belt G3-D5. A faithful housemaid. Grew up near Yorkshire & has the accent to prove it. Although she is from a lower class family, her wisdom is often far beyond her age.

Archibald Craven: Male, 30-50, Baritone C3-A4. Mary’s uncle & lord of Misselthwaite Manor. He has a hunch-back. Haunted by the past & afraid of the future, he locks himself away both physically & mentally. Mary painfully reminds him too much of his wife, Lily, who died 10 years ago.

Ben Weatherstaff: Male, Age & Vocal Range Flexible. Head gardener. Secretly entrusted to take care of the garden after Lily’s death. Knows a great deal about the history of the garden & the grounds it sits on. He’s worked for the family for many years. He calls himself “an old man.”

Dickon: Male, 13-25, Tenor D3-G4. Martha’s younger brother. Looks after the sick plants & animals within the Misselthwaite grounds — including Mary. He’s a young man who is between the world of child imagination & adult reasoning. Befriends Mary & convinces her to take care of the Garden.

Colin Craven: Male, 9-15, A3-E5. Archibald’s 10-year-old son. Spent his life in bed due to a heart condition. He’s very stubborn & throws temper tantrums to get what he wants. He believes his father hates him for causing Lily’s death.

Mrs. Winthrop: Female, Age & Vocal Range Flexible. Headmistress of a private school. Prides herself on nurturing girls with tempers. Mary seems to be more than she can handle.

Rose Lennox: Female, 25-45, Soprano A3-D6. Mary’s mother. A “dreamer” from the past who doesn’t understand how her sister Lily could truly love Archibald. Very loyal to her husband & refuses to leave India during the cholera outbreak that takes her life.
